I watched Ponyo once in passing and didn’t really understand it, then I watched it again noticing a lot of things I missed out on the first round. Like how Ponyo grew and domineered over her father and his old ways. She completely ignored her father and ran after the little boy that lives off the Earth he’s trying to protect. I find it weird when people impose feelings of love on children other than those of a family like nature. I choose to believe that Ponyo represents the ocean and/or the Earth and Sosuke is the representative for humans. I think at first it was in nature’s hands i.e. Ponyo’s parents. Then the population increased everything became crowded- people began living on the edge of the beach and leaving trash everywhere. I know it had something to do with the huge tsunami in Japan. I especially note the people coming together with boats to signify the unity in the Japanese communities when disasters occur.
I didn’t really care for this movie, don’t crucify me, as I stated before I don’t like forcing love on children. They have yet experience life what does love mean to them, this was just a glorified arranged marriage between a new human and a boy that liked his boat becoming real. I do see why they used children though.
They are pure, as how their friendship was when he eventually realized he was hurting her and pulled to safety.I’m not a literature buff I just like anime, if you have another opinion on this anime movie please do spill.
