Ready to be confused and left in the dark till the end of the movie? Just a regular old Perfect Blue. I like movies that surprise and keep me wondering till the end. I didn’t like the little girl because I didn’t understand at first. The beginning makes it seem as though she’s being bratty towards her mother who just wants to love her. It’s irrational how much misunderstandings can ruin lives. I found it interesting that despite Anna’s attitude change she kept to her art, which eventually led her to meet Marnie who whisked her onto an adventure. The once energetic turned sullen girl began breaking out of her shell to Marnie, that no one else could see, or understand really.
They were alike in that they felt like they didn’t belong. Anna’s eyes which weren’t like her mother’s and Marnie who felt like she was being shut out.Their relationship can seem weird because their really close for girls who just met but to me it was saddening. It made me want to believe that Marnie was there with her and that she wasn’t alone, in an old abandoned house.
I liked the ending though where you realize that Marnie’s really her grandmother. Her stories which she told to Anna as a baby stuck with her, which in a way made it like she wasn’t alone- her grandma from the stories was keeping her company and protecting and loving her from the grave. Even though Marnie didn’t live her whole life loved she made sure her granddaughter was.I admired that through her journey with Marnie she learned to be more honest and that leaving things unsaid would cause rifts. I’ve spoiled this movie but I left a lot of things out so when you watch it won’t be boring. It’s a heartwarming movie that leaves you at a loss for words because such a young has to think about such adult things. Write your own the Ghibli movie I’m sure you have some.
