Amores Perros

This week’s movie was especially well-written, but not for the faint-hearted. I was squirming in my seat the whole time. Full of death, violence, blood, and gore. I hated it. And the worst part is I knew it would be bad. That film is none other than Amores Perros. The opening scene ushered in Octavio and his friend, Jorge covered in blood in a car chase no less. You might ask after seeing blood and carnage, why continue watching if you hated it so much? I simply waited till the last minute to find a movie again, so if i wanted to have a movie to review this week I kept my eyes shut for the worst and kept it pushing. That being said let’s get it!

Set in Mexico, Amores Perros unravels in a non-linear fashion. It’s told from three perspectives, each answering how the fatal accident came to be.

We first meet the two brothers, Ramiro and Octavio, and their lady, Susana in their overcrowded residence. Susana is Ramiro’s wife and Octavio’s sometimes lover. Caught between the two we get to see who Susana is.
In no way am I saying that Susana should’ve been abused. That she could confide in Octavio was good, but I take issue with her behavior. Octavio said they met first, but somehow she ended up with Ramiro. She must have known his character. If anything you would think his reputation would be a deterrent. But no, not for Miss Morale. Maybe she has a thing for bad boys, but she bit off more than she could handle.

She knew full well how Octavio felt about her and yet she continued using him. She was playing a dangerous game messing with Octavio. He’s not wise touching his brother’s wife seeing as Ramiro is dangerous. Moreover, Octavio seems the unstable, obsessive type. The type to unalive you if you do something he doesn’t like. By no means am I absolving Octavio’s behavior, but she played him and took his money for good measure.
One thing Susana said that tickled me was, “If you want to make God laugh, tell Him your plans” But I digress. Octavio’s mother and her grandson are to be pitied for who they have for family.

Next, we have Daniel, a married man currently separated from his wife. Daniel and his wife are no more than roommates as the only thing they share are their two daughters. The affection is gone and the void is filled with his lover, Valeria, a well know model. However, he quickly finds himself with buyer’s remorse as trouble inevitably comes after the accident. Sis is out of work as a model permanently after her leg was amputated due to gangrene.
I know we were all thinking it too when she got into the accident. I mean she took the words out of our mouths. But you shouldn’t gloat over evil happening to others.
Sis better pray she doesn’t lose him the same way she got him.

Finally, An ex-professor turned mercenary, El Chivo- my favorite of all the characters- lives devoid of most human cares. Except for the desire to reunite with his daughter, he lives in peace with his dogs. Yes, he’s still a criminal, but I wasn’t mad that he got away. A good villain deserves his flowers and this is especially true for El Chivo. How he handled his final assignment was Michelin Star, Chef’s Kiss. My question though was what inspired the hatred between the two brothers dubbed Cain and Abel? Cain said he cheated on me, and I’ll be honest I had to run that back. Truly my ears were deceiving me, right? We out here doing that in the streets of Mexico? Ninjas is nasty. Lol.
There’s no love loss between me and dogs, but even I can admit dog fights are a horrendous crime against animals. It’s no wonder Cofi killed El Chivo’s beloved dogs; that environment created a killing machine. Dogs are territorial creatures, so killing El Chivo’s dogs was inevitable.

Anypoops, I give the film 4 out of 5 rose petals.
