Mad Tiger

Kon’nichiwa!! Welcome back to another weekly Movie and TV Review!!
The movie or in this case, documentary on the chopping block is none other than Mad Tiger. The doco captures intimate moments between bandmates as bassist Kotaro Tsukada aka Peelander Red transitions out of superstar alien lifeform and into normal civilian life as the new teacher of Ninja High School. Now let’s get itttttttttt!!

Instead of traveling to Japan, we find ourselves in New York, H.Q. of the eccentric and wonderful group Peelander Z. Hailing from Planet Peelander we have, at the time of recording, current leader and bandmember Kengo Hioki aka Peelander Yellow, Yumiko Hioki aka Peelander Pink, Akihiko Naruse aka Peelander Green, and last but not least Akiteru Ito, Peelander Purple.

The camera crew or producers are kind of assholic for using scenes that the band members clearly asked them not to show, but at the same time, we get to know them through these moments. So I guess they did their job. Lol. I just kept thinking nothing you’re doing is secret or careful because what you say is going to be heard by the person you’re talking about, and they might not like it. Anypoops, through these encounters I got some understanding of the kind of man Mr. Hioki is.
Kengo is a man with a vision, and he’s worked hard to achieve it. They’ve traveled the US, been featured in several publications, and have a nice following. But because of his unyielding dedication to bringing his baby to life, others are crushed in the wake.

Kengo spoke about his life as a painter, how he’d painted over three hundred paintings, and then suddenly in a desperate need for rebirth. He destroys them by erasing them with white paint. He too erases Kengo Hioki, himself, and out of the ashes Peelander Yellow was born.

Yeah, I get that in some sense there’s a genius in him, but still, you can’t treat people anyhow and expect them to follow you to the ends of the earth. Maybe that’s the curse of brilliance.

Peelander Z puts me in mind of one of my favorite anime/manga, Beck Mongolian Chop Squad. There is a live-action version of Beck, but I just never got around to watching it because I didn’t think it would do Beck justice. I imagine the crew of Peelander Z lived the experience Koyuki and his gang had. They were on the road, performing at different venues, and like all good things that come to an end, the band eventually went their separate ways.

Anypoops, I give the Mad Tiger 4 out of 5 rose petals. Please share your thoughts. Drop a like or comment.
