Hej!! And welcome back to another weekly Movie and TV Review! It’s my lovely self serving up another review just for you. I hope the week has been kind and you’re one step closer to the life you’ve envisioned. This week’s featured film is none other than Another Round starring Mads Milkenson aka Le Chiffre if you don’t know. What rock have you been living under? Gosh! Lol. In all honesty, I don’t see don’t see the hype behind Another Round. I think its greatest selling point, not reducing the rest of the cast, was Mads. But for all his talent, he couldn’t save this mid movie. Yes, I chose violence. Now let’s get it!!!!!!!!
First, four middle-aged friends: Martin, Nikolaj, Peter, and Tommy, willingly subject themselves to a destructive experiment after lamenting the loss of their vibrant youth. According to Finn Skårderud, a Norwegian philosopher and psychiatrist, every human is born with a blood alcohol content 0.05% deficiency, so during the week for some unspecified length of time the crew indulges in liver-blackening drinking. From working hours to 8 pm, the gang of merry idiots get soused without regard for familial or occupational responsibilities. Meanwhile, Annika and Martin navigate their marriage through Martin’s midlife crisis.
Both Annika and Martin’s friend recount Martin’s adventures as a youth and how he has changed from the spirited young man he used to be, but I wonder if it wasn’t the alcohol-addled version of him they all loved. What I took from the movie is that drinking in excess with friends is fun when you’re young, but once you mature from alcoholic ways you’re no longer interested. That is exactly the version of Martin we see as an older gentleman. He is a mild-of-the-road teacher who drones on about historical events and grades too harshly. Seemingly overnight he became a lifeless shell of what used to be.
The question quickly popped into my head: Why can’t you enjoy life without alcohol? I don’t drink and I enjoy life tremendously, but then again an outsider may describe my homebody lifestyle as basic. Lol. Time and again this liquid courage has proven the cause of many problems in many lives long term. The problem is not they can’t have fun without liquor, but that Martin let the old man in. He and his friends settled into life; they forgot to grab life and shake it out for all its worth. Whatever they’re looking for, alcohol isn’t the answer.
Their friend Tommy lost his life to the disease of alcoholism, but clearly they’ve learned nothing as the surviving three went right back to the bottle in celebration of his life. Absolutely nuts my guy.
Sidenote: somebody please strip Peter of his license. He gave a minor alcohol as a remedy for anxiety. What he’s created is a lifetime abuser of the drug. In essence another Tommy.
Anypoops, I give Another Round, 3 out of 5 rose petals. Please let me know what you think of our conversation. Drop a like or comment. Peace out!!
