Another Round Review

And welcome back to another weekly Movie and TV Review!

It’s my lovely self serving up another review just for you. I hope the week has been kind and that you’re one step closer to the life you’ve envisioned.

This week’s featured film is none other than Another Round, starring Mads Mikkelsen—aka Le Chiffre if you don’t know.

What rock have you been living under?

Gosh! Lol.

In all honesty, I don’t really see the hype behind Another Round. I think its biggest selling point—without reducing the rest of the cast—was Mads himself. But for all his talent, he couldn’t save this mid movie.

Yes, I chose violence.

Now let’s get it!!!!!!!!

Four middle-aged friends—Martin, Nikolaj, Peter, and Tommy—willingly subject themselves to a destructive experiment after lamenting the loss of their youthful energy.

According to Norwegian psychiatrist and philosopher Finn Skårderud, humans are born with a blood alcohol content deficiency of 0.05%. To test this theory, the group decides to maintain that alcohol level throughout their daily lives.

What could possibly go wrong?

For an unspecified period of time, the gang of merry idiots spends their days getting progressively more intoxicated while somehow attempting to maintain their jobs, marriages, and responsibilities.

Meanwhile, Martin and his wife, Anika, struggle to navigate his growing midlife crisis.

Both Anika and Martin’s friends recount stories about the adventurous young man he used to be. They describe someone energetic, spontaneous, and full of life.

But I found myself wondering if the version they missed wasn’t simply the alcohol-fueled version of Martin.

What I took away from the film is that excessive drinking can feel exciting when you’re young, but eventually many people outgrow that lifestyle.

Martin appears to have done exactly that.

He’s become a quiet, middle-of-the-road history teacher who lectures students about historical events and grades a little too harshly.

Seemingly overnight, he transformed into a shell of the man he used to be.

That led me to a different question:

Why can’t people enjoy life without alcohol?

I don’t drink, and I enjoy life tremendously.

Granted, an outsider might describe my homebody lifestyle as basic.

Lol.

Still, time and time again, alcohol has proven capable of causing long-term damage to countless lives.

The real problem isn’t that Martin and his friends can’t have fun without drinking.

The problem is that they stopped living.

They settled into routine.

They stopped grabbing life and shaking it for everything it was worth.

Whatever they’re searching for, alcohol isn’t the answer.

Tommy

Tommy’s story is the clearest example of why the experiment ultimately fails.

He loses his life to alcoholism.

Yet somehow, after witnessing the devastating consequences firsthand, the remaining three friends celebrate his life by returning to the very thing that helped destroy him.

Absolutely nuts, my guy.

Peter Needs His License Revoked

Side note:

Somebody please strip Peter of his teaching license.

The man literally gives alcohol to a minor as a remedy for anxiety.

What he’s potentially created is a future substance abuser.

In essence, another Tommy.

And we’re supposed to think that’s heartwarming?

Absolutely not.
